A new White House policy aims to redirect billions of dollars from universities to AI-driven research platforms, sparking intense debate over the future of scientific discovery. Michael Kratsios, the director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, unveiled a 123-page document titled "Science: A New Golden Age" on July 21.

The document proposes a radical overhaul of how science is funded, questioning the role of government and the academic/research/industrial complex. If fully implemented, it will significantly disrupt long-standing assumptions about nurturing scientific knowledge.

The proposed approach emphasizes building the foundations of discovery rather than funding individual research projects at universities. This includes investing in AI infrastructure, autonomous laboratories, robotic experimentation, nuclear energy, quantum computing, vast scientific databases, and computational resources. The policy argues that governments should prioritize these resources over funding specific research projects.

Many in the academic and scientific community have expressed concern over the potential shift of hundreds of billions of research dollars from universities to industry, particularly in technology and AI sectors. Astrophysicist Ethan Siegel, known for his science podcasts, has been particularly vocal in criticizing the policy. He argues that the document aligns with the policies of Nazi Germany in 1933, which led to the destruction of Germany's scientific achievements.

Siegel believes the document represents a "recipe for burning the existing house down," suggesting that while fundamental science may continue, it will not be led by the United States.
