Barco joins Chelsea rebuild from Strasbourg

Valentin Barco, a 22-year-old Argentine footballer, has joined Chelsea from sibling club Strasbourg on a seven-year contract. The new signing is the seventh addition to the Chelsea squad this transfer window and the thirteenth deal between the two clubs since the start of last season, who share an ownership group. Barco, who can play as left-back or in midfield, previously had a brief stint with Brighton three years ago before moving to Strasbourg on loan in 2024, later signing permanently a year later after helping the club qualify for the Conference League.

The Argentine international, who was part of the team that reached the World Cup final, had a minor disagreement with fellow England player Jude Bellingham during the semi-final due to his enthusiastic celebrations. Chelsea's recent transfer market activity includes the signing of veteran striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton, along with Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace, Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, Marco Palestra, Emegha, and Geovany Quenda.
