At least 14 dead as Ukraine, Russia exchange strikes

At least 14 people lost their lives in the latest exchange of strikes between Ukraine and Russia, officials from both nations report. The Russian attacks killed at least nine people, while Ukrainian strikes claimed at least five lives. The escalation of attacks follows nearly four-and-a-half years of conflict in Ukraine. Civilian casualties in Ukraine have been on the rise, as Russia has relied more on long-range missiles that are harder to intercept, according to UN data.

The Russian assault on Ukraine's Belgorod region, bordering Ukraine, resulted in four deaths, including a 13-year-old girl who was gravely injured near a playground. Medics attempted to save her life, but her injuries were fatal. A drone attack on Russia's Saratov region, near Kazakhstan, claimed two lives, while three individuals were killed in a Ukrainian drone strike on a car in Russia's Udmurtia region.

Ukraine's acting governor, Olga Abramova, condemned the drone strike, stating that the victims were not military targets. In Ukraine, Russian strikes killed two people in Dnipropetrovsk, one in Zaporizhzhia, one in Kherson, and a postal worker in the northern Kharkiv region, according to regional authorities.

The US-led talks aimed at ending Europe's deadliest conflict since World War II have been suspended since February, following the joint US-Israeli strikes on Iran. Russia and Ukraine both deny targeting civilians in these exchanges of strikes.
