Trawling resumes off Kerala’s coast despite adverse weather, but fishers face financial troubles

The lifting of the trawling ban off Kerala's coast has not brought the anticipated joy to the fishing community. Hundreds of trawlnet boats and workers, including migrant workers, had prepared to venture into the deep sea for fishing following a 52-day ban. However, most operators had to postpone their plans due to a warning from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) about possible gusty winds and inclement weather. A few boats did go to sea from Kochi, but many returned as the weather was not favorable.

Despite the warning, some large vessels, around 20 meters long, ventured into the sea. However, they have yet to return. P.P. Gireesh, secretary of the Trawlnet Boat Owners Association, stated that more boats will venture into the sea from Kalamukku harbour at Vypeen in the coming days, with hopes of a good catch of pink perch.

However, the traditional fishing sector remains disappointed. Traditional and artisanal fishers had hoped the ban period would bring a bounty to them as they are legally permitted to fish in nearshore waters, while mechanized trawlers remain ashore. Yesudas Parappilly, district secretary of the Matsyathozhilali Union (CITU), expressed disappointment with the poor catch, attributing it to dry weather conditions.

He emphasized that the lack of expected income has pushed traditional fisherfolk into a financial crisis, affecting their plans to repay loans used to repair their boats. He urged the government to conduct a detailed study on the plight of traditional fisherfolk and announce a package for them.
