Mahama commissions refurbished TOR Crude Distillation Unit, commends management for turnaround

President John Mahama recently inaugurated the recently refurbished Crude Distillation Unit (CDU) at the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), signaling a significant milestone in rejuvenating the operations of the state-owned refinery. The event also saw the President witness the official acceptance of Ghana’s Jubilee crude oil for domestic refining, a strategic move to bolster local petroleum processing and lessen dependency on imported finished petroleum products.

The Crude Distillation Unit, serving as the primary processing component in an oil refinery, separates crude oil into distinct fractions based on their boiling points, setting the stage for further refining into essential products like gasoline, diesel, and various other petroleum derivatives. During the commissioning ceremony, Mahama took the opportunity to laud the management, board, and employees of TOR for their commendable efforts in reviving the refinery’s operations without any direct financial aid from the government.

He extolled their commitment and inventive spirit in restoring the facility, describing the achievement as a testament to what can be accomplished through proficient management and unwavering dedication.

The refurbishment of the CDU is anticipated to elevate TOR’s ability to process crude oil locally, bolster energy security, and bolster Ghana’s industrial growth.
