Lifestyle factors associated with cataract surgery among working age adults in Japan using claims and health screening data

Cataract surgery among adults in Japan's workforce was analyzed using claims and health screening data from January 2005 to August 2023. Researchers identified 30,971 cases who underwent surgery and 92,913 controls without cataract diagnoses. A conditional logistic regression found hypertension, diabetes, renal dysfunction, hyperuricemia and excessive alcohol consumption were linked to earlier surgery.

Subgroup analyses revealed these associations varied by age group, with ORs for hypertension and diabetes decreasing with age. The study concludes modifiable lifestyle factors influence the timing of cataract surgery in working-age individuals. No external funding was received.
