Here are college degrees that offer the most career flexibility in US

Recent college graduates with English, visual and performing arts, and communications majors are finding it easier to transition into various industries, according to a LinkedIn analysis. These students are demonstrating a 69%, 68%, and 68% adaptability score respectively, compared to their peers in highly specialized fields like engineering, education, or healthcare.

The shift in job market dynamics - with overall hiring on LinkedIn down 20% from pre-pandemic levels and 5% year-over-year - is driving this trend. Versatility in skills, rather than prestige, is now key in today's economy. LinkedIn's study tracked the 20 most common majors among recent bachelor's graduates from 2022-2024, examining their full-time employment status one year after graduation.

English majors topped the list, showing that their skills in communication, writing, and analytical thinking are highly marketable. Graduates in visual and performing arts also ranked highly, with their competencies in creative strategy and digital engagement opening doors in sectors beyond the arts. Communications and journalism majors followed closely behind.

In contrast, graduates with specialized training in engineering, education, and healthcare have more targeted skills, which can make it challenging to pivot into unrelated professions if demand in their specific sectors declines. LinkedIn's Head of Economics for the Americas, Kory Kantenga, attributes this growing premium on adaptability to technological disruption.

He noted that as artificial intelligence automates more routine work, employers are placing a higher value on uniquely human abilities, particularly strong communication skills.
