A customisable environmental sensor proof-of-concept to enable prescription medicine reuse

The article discusses a proof-of-concept Smart Packaging and Returns Assessment System (SPaRAS) designed to tackle the concerns of costs and safety risks associated with medicine reuse. This innovative system is a customizable smart sensor that monitors the storage conditions of medicines during patient care and simplifies the examination of returned medicines using Near Field Communication (NFC) technology.

The researchers evaluated the lifespan of SPaRAS under different sample rates, examining its power consumption, memory usage, and data download time upon return. When running at the same sample rate as sensors currently in use within the UK National Health Service (NHS), SPaRAS can gather data for 17 days. This duration is deemed sufficient for use within a larger trial for prescription medicine reuse.

If a custom circuit board were implemented to reduce power consumption, the device could operate for 337 days with its current memory capacity.

With further in-situ testing, this extended lifespan would enable the verification of the conditions for most medicines. This research was partially supported by a University of Reading Regional Bursary. The work involved collaboration between the University of Reading's School of Biological Sciences and Techno International New Town in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. The study emphasizes the potential for biomedical science and engineering to revolutionize the way we approach prescription medicine reuse.
