Trump says U.S. has 'not agreed to' grant Ukraine Patriot missile licenses

U.S. President Donald Trump declared on Friday that the United States has not agreed to provide Ukraine the licenses to produce Patriot missile systems, seemingly contradicting a prior promise. The advanced weaponry is a significant challenge to offer, Trump stated at a Cabinet meeting at Camp David, emphasizing the importance of caution when entrusting such technology to another nation.

He clarified that the U.S. and Ukraine are still discussing the matter. The President's comments on the Russia-Ukraine conflict emerged three days after a White House meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who reported a positive discussion on the Patriot licenses. Trump's apparent reversal follows rising worries about the U.S. depleting its reserves of high-tech armaments, including Patriots, while continuing its conflict with Iran, with air defenses playing a crucial role in thwarting Iranian missiles.

Less than three weeks earlier, Trump had assured Zelenskyy that the U.S. would grant Ukraine a license to manufacture Patriots, although he noted that they had not yet informed the manufacturers, likely referring to defense firms Lockheed Martin or RTX. However, on Thursday, Trump told the Financial Times that he was uncertain if he would proceed with the plan to allow Kyiv to build the sophisticated weapon.

Ukraine's U.S. embassy has not yet commented on Trump's most recent statements. Zelenskyy emphasizes the critical role of the Patriot system in intercepting incoming ballistic missiles from Russia. Even if Ukraine receives the green light to commence manufacturing Patriots, it may still take years before these expensive, highly intricate weapons are produced domestically.

Nonetheless, the issue remains a top priority for Kyiv, with Zelenskyy stating that his teams will continue to coordinate and address all discussed topics.
