Qualcomm Confirms Snapdragon Price Hike, Android Phones May Cost More

Qualcomm announced it will raise prices for its Snapdragon processors starting September 1, potentially leading to higher costs for Android phone makers and consumers. The semiconductor giant reported its fiscal third-quarter earnings, with CEO Cristiano Amon stating the price increase aims to protect margins amid rising manufacturing costs.

Amon noted that the semiconductor industry faces higher costs across various stages, including wafer fabrication, assembly, testing, advanced packaging, memory, and other materials. While Qualcomm did not disclose the exact amount of the price hike, industry reports suggest some Snapdragon chips could see increases in the double-digit percentage range.

Many premium and midrange Android devices rely on Qualcomm's processors, so any price increase could ultimately be reflected in retail prices. Smartphone manufacturers like Samsung, Xiaomi, OnePlus, Oppo, Realme, and others are affected. Amon also mentioned that shifting consumer behavior due to memory price increases may lead buyers towards lower-end premium phones, as manufacturers decide whether to absorb higher chip costs or pass them on to customers.
