GTA 6 download codes will expire 170 days after launch in Japan

Grand Theft Auto 6 download codes in Japan will become invalid 170 days after the game's release on November 19, 2026, according to Rockstar's support page. This expiration date is a result of Japan's Payment Services Act, enforced by the Financial Services Agency of Japan. The act mandates digital code sellers to maintain funds for instances where a company may cease operations, though this regulation doesn't apply to products expiring within six months.

Rockstar announced in June that GTA 6's physical copies would come with a download code instead of a disc, a move that came before Sony's decision to cease physical disc production for new PlayStation games beginning January 2028. The shift to digital formats, driven by changing consumer preferences and broader industry trends, prompted Sony's decision.

However, Sony later clarified that publishers can reorder existing PlayStation discs post the production discontinuation. Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser expressed his support for providing physical copies if consumers desire them, acknowledging the benefits of digital releases in terms of updating and fixing game issues.
