Gretchen Whitmer endorses Haley Stevens for Michigan Senate seat

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has backed Rep. Haley Stevens in her bid for the U.S. Senate seat, which will be vacated by retiring Sen. Gary Peters. In a video posted on Stevens' social media, Whitmer stated that her strategy as governor is to "get things done," and that is why she is endorsing Stevens. Stevens will be facing off against fellow Democrat Abdul El-Sayed and Republican candidate Mike Rogers in the upcoming primary election on August 4th.

Stevens, who has received endorsements from outgoing Sen. Gary Peters and other mainstream Democrats, is seen as the more moderate choice in the race. El-Sayed, on the other hand, represents the progressive wing of the party, and has received support from progressive lawmakers such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Sen. Bernie Sanders, and Sen. Elizabeth Warren.

El-Sayed has also criticized Stevens for receiving a significant amount of outside donations, including nearly $30 million from the United Democracy Project, which is affiliated with AIPAC. The primary race has garnered national attention as Democrats strive to keep the seat blue, while Republicans aim to flip it.
