UK has no plans to slow down AI data center construction

The UK's growth minister has stated that the country has no intention of curbing AI data center construction. In fact, Minister Dan Tomlinson believes that the ongoing demand for data centers, particularly in the realm of artificial intelligence, will lead to an expansion of such infrastructure. Tomlinson confirmed that AI is becoming more prevalent across the UK's economy, necessitating more data centers to sustain this growth.

While Tomlinson acknowledged that the UK government will require data centers to invest in local communities and generate jobs to obtain financial support, he also emphasized that the UK has learned from some of the excesses in the US data center construction sector. The UK aims to adopt a more measured approach with enhanced oversight compared to the haphazard development observed in certain parts of the United States.

According to the UK Compute Roadmap, a document outlining how the UK can meet the increasing power requirements of AI, the nation needs to achieve a minimum of 6GW of computing capacity from data centers by 2030. The UK previously facilitated this process by implementing the AI Growth Zones initiative under the previous administration of Prime Minister Keir Starmer in 2025.

However, the construction of data centers in the UK has faced opposition from residents. Across the ocean, in the United States, a majority of voters have indicated their preference for regulating the rapid pace of data center construction through local ballot measures.
