Transactional Outbox Pattern in Laravel SaaS

Your SaaS order just committed. The invoice row is in Postgres. Somewhere else a queue publish failed, timed out, or never ran because the process died between the two calls. Now billing thinks the order exists and the warehouse worker never heard about it. That gap is the dual-write problem, and it shows up in every Laravel app that "saves then dispatches." I run Loop Origin , where we build and…

The Transactional Outbox Pattern is a solution to the dual-write problem in Laravel SaaS applications. When a transaction commits, the business data is saved in the database, but the side effects, such as publishing to a message queue or sending a webhook, may fail or be delayed. This can lead to discrepancies between the system's state and external services.

The outbox pattern addresses this issue by writing both the business row and an outbox row in the same database transaction. A separate worker process reads the unpublished outbox rows, publishes them to the broker, and marks them as published. Since the database is the single source of truth for this event, idempotent consumers are necessary due to the at-least-once delivery guarantee of message brokers.

The outbox table schema includes columns for deduplication, timestamps, and error handling. The unique index on the tenant_id and dedupe_key columns prevents accidental double inserts when a request retries with the same logical event.

During writes, the transaction includes both the order creation and the outbox message creation. If the transaction rolls back, neither the order nor the outbox row is created. If it commits, the side effect is durable and will be processed by the worker, even if the message broker is temporarily unavailable.

The publishing worker claims unpublished outbox rows using FOR UPDATE SKIP LOCKED, allowing multiple replicas to safely process the messages. Once published, the worker marks the outbox row as published, ensuring the message is not processed again. By using this pattern, Laravel SaaS applications can reliably handle dual-write scenarios without worrying about data inconsistencies or message processing failures.
