Melaka plans five-year push to transform Kota Laksamana into state capital

Melaka's Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh, has announced a five-year plan to transform Kota Laksamana into the state's new capital. Rauf explained that the rapid development in the area has the potential to catalyze economic growth and revitalize the state's landscape. The government has formulated a development plan for Kota Laksamana, which encompasses commercial, residential, healthcare, and tourism sectors within the Straits of Melaka Waterfront Economic Zone (SM-WEZ).

While the plans are in place, the government is working with private companies under the Private Finance Initiative (PFI) to realize the potential, as they hold the acquired land. Rauf appealed to the people to join in the development of Melaka and breathe new life into Kota Laksamana. The state government is also ramping up disaster preparedness, identifying 102 flood hotspots across the state.

Preparedness measures include round-the-clock monitoring of floodwaters, rainfall data, and river levels in six major river basins. The early warning system has been enhanced with 14 flood warning sirens and 10 surveillance cameras. Flood mitigation assets, such as water control gates, pump houses, and portable emergency pumps, have been readied, along with monitoring 105 flood retention ponds.

Additionally, 447 small-scale works worth RM43.8 million have been carried out to bolster flood management infrastructure. Residents, especially in coastal areas, are advised to remain vigilant as the high-tide phenomenon expected until Nov 17 could cause flash floods in low-lying areas. The Melaka State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) will continue to issue early alerts and advisories through the committee to ensure an effective emergency response.
