Last call for Singapore’s Teochew Meat Puff as beloved pasar malam stall bows out after 40 years

Singapore's beloved Teochew Meat Puff stall, having operated for 40 years, will be closing its doors after its final appearance in a pasar malam this month in Sengkang. In a Facebook post shared on October 30, Teochew Meat Puff Pte Ltd announced the closure, stating that this might be their last run as they plan to retire. The family-run business, owned by He Ying, his wife, and their son, had recently reopened after a one-month break and currently operates from an open field opposite Fernvale Primary School.

The stall, known for its deep-fried snacks called oyster fritters, expressed gratitude for the continuous support from customers over the past four decades.

He Qiangde, the second-generation owner, disclosed to Shin Min Daily News that the closure had been contemplated for the past year or two, primarily due to his parents' age. His father is nearly 90 years old, and he wishes for them to be able to rest properly after dedicating 40 years to the business. Rising costs of ingredients and rental fees also played a part in the decision, as current sales figures are more than 50 per cent lower than before the pandemic. Operating daily from 12 pm to 9.30 pm, the stall will remain open until November 14.

The increasing number of night markets and diminishing customer crowds by 8 pm added to the challenges of maintaining a unique appeal, the stall noted. While the family feels reluctant about closing, He Qiangde expressed his gratitude for the customers' support throughout the years. He has even considered selling the family recipe, provided that he personally teaches it to ensure the quality of the oyster fritters is maintained.
