FIFA President Gianni Infantino praised Nigeria’s Flamingos for their historic victory at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. The U-17 team defeated Japan 2-1 in the final, held at the Mohammed VI Football Academy in Rabat, Morocco, to claim the title. Infantino described the achievement as well-deserved and highlighted it as a significant moment for Nigeria and the continent.
Nigeria made history by becoming the first African team to win a FIFA Women’s U-17 World Cup. The team defied early setbacks, including a loss to Poland, to secure six consecutive wins and claim the championship. Their final victory saw Awawu Bashiru score first, followed by Oluebube Umejiaku’s decisive goal and subsequent Golden Ball award.
This triumph marks a landmark achievement for Nigerian football and ends Africa’s long wait for a FIFA women’s world title.
