Flags, ceramah and festive lights: Melaka juggles polls and Deepavali

Melaka, a historic city known for its political campaigns and cultural diversity, recently celebrated a blend of political campaigns and Deepavali festivities last night. Amid the political ceramah and party flags, the Stadthuys grounds and Jonker Walk saw the Melaka Bila Larut Malam programme, Deepavali 2026, take center stage. The main stage featured cross-cultural performances, showcasing songs, classical melodies, nimble dancers in vibrant saris and kurtas, and a captivating display from Badan Warisan Seni Melaka.

The festivities also extended to the Little India Melaka area, where shoppers filled the streets for last-minute essentials like new clothes, home decorations, and traditional sweets such as muruku and ladoo. The lively atmosphere resembled a colorful mural, with shops displaying colorful attire and flower garlands. Henna-painting stalls were filled with women adorning their fingers with traditional floral patterns to complete their Deepavali look.

People from various communities and foreign tourists joined in the festivities, wearing traditional attire and enjoying popular street food like pani puri and samosas.

The success of the Deepavali celebrations in Melaka highlights the importance of cultural diversity and unity, reminding people that seasons and political differences should not divide them. The Election Commission has set November 14 as polling day for the 16th Melaka State Election, with early voting taking place on November 10.
