Fermin double seals Barcelona’s comeback win at Atleti
Fermin Lopez scored twice as Barcelona came from behind to claim a gritty win over Atletico Madrid, which maintained their advantage at the top of La Liga.
Barcelona secured a crucial victory over Atletico Madrid, extending their lead at the top of La Liga. Fermin Lopez netted twice, ensuring the three-point gap between the two teams. Earlier, Real Madrid had drawn with Valencia, leaving Barca with a solitary point advantage, but Lopez's double at the Metropolitano Stadium closed that gap.
Barcelona will enter the international break with a three-point cushion over Atletico, who remain third in the table. Only a home defeat to Real earlier this month had seen Barcelona fail to win in the league this season. Atletico dominated the first half, but missed a chance to double their lead. The visitors hit the crossbar and post early on, with Barcelona's Giuliano Simeone opening the scoring from a low cross in the sixth minute.
Atletico looked set to extend their lead, but Barcelona equalized shortly before halftime when Lopez curled home after the hosts failed to clear their lines. Despite Atletico's efforts, they couldn't find an equalizer and now sit five points behind Barcelona in third place.
