Building Reliable iOS Apps With AI Agents
AI agents can build iOS apps end to end. For reliable apps you still own two things: the system design, kept in C4 diagrams, and the harness around the agent.
In my previous article, "Breaking Free from Xcode: Unlock AI's Full Potential in iOS," I explored the early struggles of using AI agents for iOS development. Today, those challenges have largely been overcome thanks to smarter models and built-in agents in Xcode. This allows for quick prototyping and MVP development with AI. However, for applications requiring the same reliability as running water, two principles remain crucial: design and harness.
The first principle emphasizes that designers still own the overall system architecture. Rather than relying on memory, developers should let AI handle the intricate method calls and state management while they focus on the high-level design. Visualization tools like the C4 model help depict this architecture at different zoom levels.
While a project architecture can be documented in AGENTS.md, a more dedicated docs/architecture/ folder is recommended. This allows for easy retrieval of architecture context when needed, without overloading the agent's context.
The second principle focuses on harnessing the full potential of AI models. Although models have made significant strides, they still require guidance. Developers should prioritize automation through unit tests, integration tests, CI, and linters to catch most mistakes before the code even reaches their eyes. A separate agentic review should then assess the changes, as the same diff might yield different feedback each time.
Once the code passes all checks, a human developer can review it more thoroughly. This approach ensures that AI complements human expertise, rather than replacing it entirely.
