UAE job has been either a stepping stone or a pension fund in the past, but now Ahmed Raza is the perfect fit
There is nothing like the threat of losing a vast tranche of cash to focus the mind. With one-day international status – and all the ICC funding it unlocks - in jeopardy, the UAE find themselves with a new coach. Like usual. For the second time in successive cycles, the national team have lost a seasoned Mumbaikar of some pedigree in the world of coaching, on the eve of a World Cup Qualifier…
Ahmed Raza, the new head coach of the UAE men's national cricket team, is charged with the task of rescuing a team in turmoil, just like his predecessor, Mudassar Nazar, was four years ago. Raza, who previously coached the UAE women's team, is now leading the men's team in a critical period. The UAE team needs to secure ODI survival in the upcoming Cricket World Cup League Two tournament, which begins on December 4.
The coach's appointment is particularly timely, as the team's recent performance in the World Cup League Two was lackluster, finishing last. However, Raza's background and experience make him well-suited for the role. Born in Sharjah, Raza made his senior national team debut at the age of 17 and later captained the team to T20 World Cup qualification.
After retiring as a player, he went on to coach the UAE women's team, accomplishing remarkable feats and earning global recognition. Despite his lack of experience in coaching the men's team, Raza's deep understanding of UAE cricket and its unique challenges is his greatest asset.
