Through sickness and labour, the show goes on for Teochew iron-rod puppeteer in her decades-long career

Toh Ai Hwa, a 76-year-old Teochew iron-rod puppeteer, has dedicated her life to performing despite numerous challenges. During her career, she performed even when heavily pregnant or sick, including giving birth during a show and riding on a motorcycle with another pregnant woman to a performance on a hill. Her mother was also a traditional Opera performer who went into labour during a performance.

Toh's grandmother was a traditional Opera singer in China, and all of her family members have a deep interest in performing arts. She started her apprenticeship in Teochew puppetry at age 12 due to her interest in singing and performing. She took over the Kim Giak Low Choon Teochew Puppet Troupe in 1989 when her boss offered to sell it to her.

Despite low income and limited bookings, Toh ensured that her children learned the trade, and her grandchildren are now involved in the puppetry performances. She hopes to continue preserving the family tradition for the sixth generation or more. Toh's achievements have been recognized with several awards, including the Living National Heritage Award and the Penang State Arts Icon Award.
