RUDA validates Pak’s first methane mitigation project

The Ravi Urban Development Authority (RUDA) has commenced validating methane capture mechanisms for carbon credits and Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs) stemming from the conversion of the Mehmood Booti dump site into an environmental park. To counteract the potent heat-trapping effects of methane emissions, RUDA has initiated Pakistan's inaugural solid-waste methane mitigation project, strategically targeting ecological tipping points and bolstering environmental feedback loops.

The validation process was overseen by independent assessors Sergio Rodrigo Santano and Anne-Sophie Benedicte Judith Zirah, who spent three days assessing the 13 million tons of waste buried beneath the park's greenery. They also imparted training on advanced monitoring, verification, and reporting (MVR) to RUDA's technical team.

Ahad Yousaf, Director of Climate Change, actively supported the assessment team through on-site surveys, boundary delineation, and greenhouse gas (GHG) footprint calculations in accordance with official protocols.

The evaluation report will be submitted to the US-based VEERA registry under Article 6 and Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement, complemented by Pakistan's Climate Change Policy 2021, Pakistan Climate Change Act 2017, and National Adaptation Plan 2023, as well as the National Clean Air Policy 2023. RUDA CEO Imran Amin expressed satisfaction with the accomplishment, emphasizing its alignment with Punjab Chief Minister's environmental objectives for the province.

He commended RUDA's Climate Change and Engineering teams for successfully transforming the landfill into a functional asset and launching Punjab's first carbon credit initiative.

This milestone underscores the significant transformation of one of Pakistan's largest landfills, transitioning from 'waste to wonder' to 'wonder to windfall'. RUDA is spearheading various climate change mitigation and adaptation projects, including flood protection structures, river training and floodplain management, river rewilding for biodiversity restoration, and a biogas pilot project for methane reduction planned for all 91 villages.

The company's portfolio also encompasses extensive afforestation for carbon sequestration and comprehensive wastewater treatment utilizing both engineered and nature-based wetlands.
