Navy rescues Bayelsa commissioner, others after boat mishap

The Nigerian Navy has successfully rescued Bayelsa State Commissioner for Trade, Industry and Investment, Mrs Ebiere Jones, along with six other passengers from a boat accident in the Abedigbene waters of Brass Local Government Area. Sadly, a police officer among the eight people on board is still missing as search and rescue efforts persist.

The Navy's Forward Operating Base, FOB FORMOSO, stationed at Labrador Lagosgbene Houseboat, collaborated with local divers and members of the Abedigbene fishing community to conduct the rescue. The rescue operation was initiated after a distress call from a local fisherman reported a boat accident involving a passenger vessel traveling from Yenagoa to Akassa on Thursday.

Upon receiving the distress signal, naval personnel swiftly responded to the incident location and initiated search and rescue operations. Out of the eight passengers, seven were recovered during the operation, including Jones and an NSCDC officer, with no visible injuries reported. The survivors were provided with first aid at the houseboat before being transported to Yenagoa on Friday to reunite with their families.

Capt. Sunday Haruna, Commanding Officer of FOB FORMOSO, commended the naval personnel's swift action, commitment, and professionalism in the rescue. He also acknowledged the contributions of local divers and the Abedigbene fishing community, emphasizing the significance of cooperation between security agencies and host communities during emergencies.

Haruna assured that the Navy remains committed to maritime safety and strengthening its relationship with communities within its operational environment.
