LaLiga: 'I feel sorry for him, it saddens me' - Ex-Barça star pities Vinicius Junior

Former Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti has expressed his sympathy for Vinicius Junior, lamenting the Brazilian winger's recent struggles to recapture his former attacking prowess. Umtiti, who played alongside Vinicius during his time at Barcelona, stated that he feels sorry for the Real Madrid forward as he grapples with a dip in performance. Umtiti shared his concerns while discussing Real Madrid's match against AEK Athens on Spanish radio station Cadena SER.

Vinicius has been lacking the confidence and attacking threat that once set him apart as one of Europe's most dangerous players. Umtiti noted that the Frenchman has been out of form for weeks, months, or even seasons. He added that opposing defenders no longer show concern when Vinicius receives the ball, as he no longer poses a significant threat. The former France international also highlighted that Vinicius has become less effective in possession, resulting in frequent turnovers and a lack of sharpness in front of goal.

Umtiti raised questions about Real Madrid's tactical decision to deploy Vinicius on the left flank while other players vie for starting positions. He questioned whether the club should continue prioritizing the Brazilian or implement a system where players earn their spots based on current form. Umtiti acknowledged the difficulties associated with Real Madrid's attacking setup, explaining that placing Vinicius on the left means deploying Diomande on the right, where the latter struggles.

The ex-Barcelona defender believes that Real Madrid must decide between fostering genuine competition for playing time or maintaining a clear hierarchy that keeps Vinicius on the left wing for now. Umtiti emphasized that results ultimately determine the outcome, and while Real Madrid is winning, Vinicius is no longer performing at that level in La Liga or the Champions League.

He also pointed out that Vinicius' failure to win the 2024 Ballon d'Or has likely contributed to his decreased confidence and subsequent decline in form.
