Gunman opens fire in Polish city of Krakow, killing 6 people and injuring 15

KRAKOW, Poland - A gunman targeted a bustling market square in Krakow on Saturday afternoon, resulting in the deaths of six individuals and injuries to fifteen others, authorities reported. The perpetrator, a Polish citizen, indiscriminately fired at people as he drove into the Main Square, a popular tourist attraction. Police officers among the wounded, the gunman was eventually shot and wounded during a gunfight with officers near the initial violence, according to Krakow police.

The death toll was initially five, but increased to six following an update from the Malopolski regional government. Wearing military-style fatigues and wielding a military-type long gun, the perpetrator acted alone, as confirmed by police, who also discovered additional weapons and ammunition in his vehicle. Images from the scene depicted a scene of chaos with police officers, ambulances, and a Polish Medical Air Rescue helicopter stationed in the square.

A tram driver recounted being shot at by the gunman from a moving car just before the main square, with the window of his vehicle shattering. Tourists, numbering around 15 million annually, predominantly pass through the Main Square. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and President Karol Nawrocki expressed their condolences to the victims, their families, and the wounded.

U.S. Ambassador to Poland Tom Rose condemned the massacre, stating that America stands in solidarity with Poland during this tragic time.
