Asamoah Gyan in tears as father George Gyan is laid to rest

Asamoah Gyan, former Black Stars captain and Ghana's all-time leading scorer, was deeply moved as his father, George Gyan Baffour Mensah, was laid to rest on Saturday, November 7. The emotional occasion saw Gyan joined by his elder brother, former Ghana international Baffour Gyan, who delivered a heartfelt tribute. Videos capturing the scene depicted Gyan visibly distressed as he bid farewell to his ailing father.

The news of George Gyan's passing was first reported by Asamoah Gyan on July 24. In his announcement, he expressed gratitude to his father for his unwavering support throughout his life, stating, "I'm happy you saw my greatness, Da. Thank you for taking care of us. You will forever be in our hearts. R.I.P. (ASASE J)." The family later confirmed the death had occurred on June 29 in Accra, following a brief illness. George Gyan, affectionately known as Asaase Jay, had maintained a private life away from public scrutiny.

George Gyan, 82, had passed away after a short illness, and his burial took place on Saturday, the date chosen after a one-week period of mourning. The family expressed their gratitude in a post on August 23, acknowledging the presence of several prominent figures during the observance, including Sports Minister Kofi Adams, Ghana Football Association president Kurt Okraku, Azumah Nelson, Abedi Pele, and his family, as well as former GFA president Kwesi Nyantakyi.

Asamoah Gyan, with a career tally of 51 goals, including six goals from World Cup appearances, made significant contributions to the Ghanaian national team from 2006 to 2014. He was instrumental in Ghana's quarter-final run in the 2010 World Cup held in South Africa. In September, Gyan was appointed as the Black Stars' clubs and player relations manager.
