Two alleged members of an online dating scam syndicate have been arrested in Cape Town, South Africa, according to Metro Police. The suspects, aged between 20 and 25, were apprehended in the city on Thursday following an extensive investigation. The suspects are accused of luring victims into romantic relationships, drugging them, and robbing them of personal belongings.
According to Metro Police spokesperson Ruth Solomons, the operation began when safety officers received information about a stolen Audi A3 linked to theft cases registered at Cape Town Central Saps. The officers monitored the vehicle in the Central Business District (CBD) and later detained the suspects when they got into the car. The officers recovered various items, including bank and identity cards, cellphones, and three Point-of-Sale devices, during the search of the suspects' vehicle.
Further searches at the suspects' residence led to the discovery of additional cash, jewelry, drugs, and another Point-of-Sale device. The two suspects are now facing charges including conspiracy to commit fraud, offenses under the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act, possession of drugs, and possession of false number plates. Police have called on anyone with additional information to come forward, as the investigation is ongoing.
