THE LONG ROADS HOME: Taking stock, nearly eight years on from a pandemic that changed us
Roads dissipate like shape-shifting mirages when the stories of the unfolding years dissolve into what’s really in front of you. As the final days of the year are swallowed up, you cast an eye over your shoulder and realise how far you’ve all come. This is an update of this story, first published in December 2024.
Nearly eight years have passed since the onset of a pandemic that altered our lives dramatically. As we near the end of 2026, we reflect on the journey that began in 2014 when we moved from Cape Town to Cradock. Along the way, we've experienced life's twists and turns, both physically and emotionally.
In 2014, we met Sandra Antrobus, a remarkable woman who became a dear friend. Her home, the Tuishuise and Victoria Manor, became our second home during our 11 years in Cradock. Sandra's legacy is deeply missed as she has passed away, leaving a significant void in our lives.
Living in a small town brought a unique perspective – what was near became distant, while the vastness of the world became more apparent. We ventured out to explore, visiting family, friends, and new places. These journeys shaped our lives, bringing new experiences and memories.
Family gatherings, work trips, and spontaneous road trips became a regular part of our lives. We explored various parts of South Africa, from Cape Town to Cradock, Graaff-Reinet, and even international destinations like Helsinki and Lisbon. Each journey brought its own set of stories, friendships, and challenges.
In 2015, we welcomed Phil, an English friend, to Cape Town. Tragically, his time here was cut short due to a stabbing incident. Although he physically recovered, his mental health remained affected. This event has left a lasting impact on our lives.
Throughout the past few years, we've continued to embrace the road as our constant companion. From boekehuis writings to celebrating milestones with friends, life has taken us on an incredible journey. As we look towards the future, we cherish the memories of our past travels and look forward to new adventures ahead.
