Pentagon officials are considering several candidates to replace War Secretary Pete Hegseth, who is facing impeachment proceedings. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is the leading contender. Mike Waltz, a former security adviser and current UN ambassador, has also been mentioned as a potential replacement. Both candidates are seen as unfavorable choices, but preferable to Hegseth, who has been criticized for various issues like his handling of Signal-gate, military purges, and the Iran war.
Hegseth has been trying to save his position by appealing to Trump and the MAGA base, but his efforts seem unlikely to succeed.
