Motorcyclist killed, another seriously hurt in trailer accident in Sungai Petani
SUNGAI PETANI: One motorcyclist was killed and another seriously injured after their motorcycles brushed against the side of a trailer while they were trying to shelter from rain on the North-South Expressway.
Two motorcycle riders sought refuge under an overhead bridge near Sungai Petani during heavy rain. Tragically, their attempt to hide from the storm proved fatal when their bikes collided with a trailer.
Mohd Khairul Azi mi Mohd Nazeri, aged 23, lost his life at the scene after being dragged by the trailer. His 23-year-old friend sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital. Initial investigations revealed that both men were traveling from Alor Setar to Sungai Petani in their Yamaha Y15ZR motorcycles, attempting to avoid another stopped motorcycle beneath the bridge. The collision with the trailer proved disastrous, dragging the riders beneath its middle section.
The trailer driver escaped unharmed, but the police collected the deceased's body for a post-mortem examination. The case is under investigation as per Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. The 40-year-old trailer driver, from Bayan Lepas, Penang, submitted a negative drug screening report.
