Vending Machine Challenge

The MackIAExpend submission for the MLH x DEV Writing Challenge presents an IoT-enabled physical vending and authentication machine. This innovative device integrates local microcontrollers (ESP32 and Raspberry Pi Pico) with cloud automation, web interfaces, and AI voice responses.

Local Interaction: The Raspberry Pi Pico handles the user interface, featuring a TFT display and local communication via UART with the ESP32. The ESP32 integrates a PN532 NFC reader (configured in I2C mode) to capture the unique identifier (UID) of physical user cards.

Workflow Automation: n8n orchestrates the backend logic, linking device events, web dashboards, and AI services through webhooks. The rapid web application and dashboard are constructed and deployed using Lovable.

AI Voice Response: Upon successful processing, ElevenLabs dynamically generates hyper-realistic human voice feedback to guide or thank the user. The physical dispensing action is triggered through network and serial communication.

Inspiration & Lessons Learned

The team aimed to elevate the traditional, mundane vending experience into an interactive, voice-driven smart appliance connected to decentralized or cloud-based workflows. This project taught the team efficient coordination between dual microcontrollers (ESP32 and Raspberry Pi Pico via UART), secure bridging of hardware with visual backend automation tools in n8n, and the development of snappy web applications with Lovable. Additionally, real-time emotional or voice feedback via ElevenLabs was integrated.

Demo

The system architecture and workflow execution are demonstrated, showcasing the Raspberry Pi Pico's TFT and keypad interface, the ESP32 and PN532 NFC reader communication, the n8n webhook endpoint, the Lovable web dashboard, and the final ElevenLabs API (TTS audio) output.

Partner Technologies

The project extensively utilizes Lovable (web application and deployment), n8n (workflow orchestration), and ElevenLabs (AI voice and audio generation). Each tool was utilized effectively, with Lovable for rapid web app prototyping, n8n for seamless backend connectivity, and ElevenLabs for immersive audio responses.

Meilisearch is the easy part. The sync worker is where it hurts.

Suppose your product catalog lives in Postgres and search is ILIKE '%term%' . It works, nobody complains, and the table is small.

  • Meilisearch's sync worker causes challenges due to cursor-based pagination issues.
  • Switching to equal sign resolves cursor stalling but stalls worker at specific documents.
  • Composite index with updatedat timestamp and id field fixes worker stalling issue.
