I’ve received no Nollywood royalties in 30 years — Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde

Veteran Nigerian actress and filmmaker Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, known as Omo Sexy, has criticized the lack of royalties in Nollywood, contrasting her experience working in Hollywood. Speaking on the Afropolitan podcast, she revealed that despite 30 years of work in Nigeria, she has never received royalties while receiving residual payments for her Hollywood projects.

During her return to Nigerian cinema with the directorial debut "Mother's Love," Omotola highlighted the need for Nollywood to improve production standards, financial accountability, and pre-production planning, borrowing lessons from Hollywood's strict working-hour rules and production procedures. She also criticized the inadequate financial controls in locally funded film projects, urging international funding organizations to ensure local productions follow established standards.

Omotola reflected on her decision to move to the United States, attributing a sense of calm and reassessment of social pressures to her relocation, which she believes improved her mental well-being.
