Ghanaian photographer James Barnor named recipient of Sony World Awards 2027 honour

Ghanaian photographer James Barnor has been honored with the Outstanding Contribution to Photography award at the 2027 Sony World Photography Awards. Known as Ghana's first photojournalist, Barnor chronicled the country's path to independence in 1957 and established the nation's first colour photography laboratory. His work spans continents and cultures, capturing Black communities in Accra and London during periods of transformation.

Recognised for his striking portraits from the 1950s to the 1970s, Barnor's visual archive of daily life offers a unique perspective on the identities of his subjects. A retrospective of over 50 of his works will be displayed at London's Somerset House as part of the Sony World Photography Awards exhibition.
