Box launches Architect, an AI-powered workflow builder

Box has introduced a new natural-language AI tool that helps users build automated workflows around document-related processes. Box Architect, announced at BoxWorks 2026 on Thursday, “effectively acts as an agentic operator of Box’s core content and workflow capabilities … to help customers design any content agentic workflow in Box,” said Aaron Levie, Box CEO, on X. Box launches Architect, an AI-powered workflow builder

Box has unveiled Architect, an AI-powered workflow builder designed to automate document-related processes. The tool, unveiled at BoxWorks 2026, enables users to describe their desired workflow in plain language, which Architect then translates into a series of steps and decisions, incorporating existing permissions, classifications, and retention policies within Box.

Users can test their workflows before publishing, with options for human review and approvals. Once deployed, Architect monitors the workflow's outputs and suggests improvements as it is used continuously.

Architect interacts with multiple existing Box tools, allowing businesses to create complex processes. For example, a bank could use Architect to design an onboarding workflow that collects applications via Box Forms, verifies documents with Box Extract, signs agreements with Box Sign, and begins account setup with Box Automate.

Moor Insights & Strategy analyst Jason Andersen noted that Architect will simplify the creation of agents and workflows based on a team's collective knowledge, rather than just individual productivity.

As with any AI system handling business data, customers must still evaluate workflow performance, advised Andersen. He added that human oversight during the creation process and the use of observability tools are recommended to ensure the agents run efficiently and manage risks and costs effectively.

Box is set to launch Architect in beta for Enterprise Advanced customers in Q4 2026, though pricing remains undisclosed. The company's Enterprise Advanced tier includes 20,000 AI Units for measuring consumption of certain Box AI features. Box also introduced a new Context Retrieval engine, built on Nvidia's Nemotron Retriever open model.

This engine improves search accuracy, speeds up question-answering, and reduces token usage, leading to better results for AI agents connected to Box documents. The Context Retrieval engine will be generally available to Enterprise Advanced customers early next year.
