90-year-old Holocaust survivor dies almost a year after being shot in the Sydney Hanukkah massacre

Eva Geller, a 90-year-old Holocaust survivor, has passed away following the injuries she sustained during a mass shooting at Bondi Beach in Sydney on December 14 last year. Geller, who was born in Hungary, was among the dozens of individuals who were wounded when two gunmen, Sajid Akram and his son Naveed Akram, opened fire during a Jewish holiday celebration.

Despite initial doctors predicting that Geller would never walk again, she showed remarkable resilience and was able to walk once more after sustaining her injuries. However, two weeks ago, Geller was admitted to the Prince of Wales Hospital, where she ultimately succumbed to her wounds. The alleged gunmen were reportedly inspired by the Islamic State, and Sajid Akram was killed at the scene, while Naveed Akram, who survived, now faces multiple murder and terror charges.

The mass shooting resulted in 15 fatalities, making it Australia's deadliest in decades within recent memory. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed deep sorrow over Geller's demise, acknowledging the ongoing pain for her family, friends, and the wider Jewish community in the wake of the tragedy. A government-backed inquiry into antisemitism, prompted by the attack, is set to release its findings on December 18. Geller's funeral is scheduled to take place the following week.
