2027 Campaigns: Presidency Seeks Caution in Use of Artificial Intelligence by Parties

The Presidency has urged politicians to exercise caution when employing Artificial Intelligence (AI) as the 2027 general election campaigns intensify. Presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, urged for responsible and cautious deployment of AI during political activities and campaigns before the 2027 polls. Onanuga cautioned that while AI has brought positive effects, it is now crucial to establish regulations to safeguard democratic institutions and public trust.

Speaking at the 7th World Media Summit in Beijing, China, Onanuga highlighted concerns regarding AI-generated content on social media platforms like X, Facebook, and TikTok, used to promote political interests and entertain. He explained that AI is now a potent tool for electoral contests, with political actors utilizing it to disseminate falsehoods, satirically for entertainment, and to highlight candidates' achievements.

Onanuga emphasized the need for stakeholders—political actors, media organizations, and the general public—to take greater responsibility in content creation and sharing. He acknowledged AI's numerous contributions, including advancements in medicine and significant achievements in mathematics, making it essential for enhancing humanity's well-being.

Onanuga expressed optimism that stakeholders, including individuals, scientists, and governments such as the United Nations, are also concerned about AI's direction and are advocating for necessary controls. He emphasized the urgency of implementing guardrails to protect humanity before it is too late.
