US First Lady Melania Trump advocated for a more enduring ceasefire in Ukraine during a rare meeting between officials from the war-torn nation and its invader Russia at the White House on Thursday. The meeting aimed to capitalize on a six-day truce in the besieged Ukrainian city of Oleshky, which Melania Trump had announced last month.

She emphasized the need to utilize the lessons learned in Oleshky to foster common ground through their shared concern for the suffering of innocent people, aiming for something more enduring than a temporary ceasefire. Melania Trump personally dispatched envoys with letters to Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, urging them to build upon the Oleshky truce as a spark for world peace amid darkness.

The ceasefire in Oleshky would not have been possible without the cooperation of Putin and Zelensky, she stated, noting that their partnership sets a meaningful precedent for regional peace. Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev thanked Melania Trump for her distinguished humanitarian role in facilitating the Oleshky truce and reuniting war-separated children.

The White House meeting also reunited Russian Human Rights Ombudsman Yana Lantratova and her Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Lubinets, who collaborated during the ceasefire to address evacuations and aid delivery in Oleshky. Melania Trump's efforts precede trilateral talks in Abu Dhabi next week, aimed at ending the Ukraine war for the first time since February, though recent rapprochement between Trump and Putin has raised concerns about potential shifts in US support for Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Zelensky recently conferred the Order of Princess Olga, First Class, upon Melania Trump for her role in brokering the Oleshky ceasefire.
