Traffickers now lure victims at gyms, with fake jobs — NAPTIP

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has issued a warning to Nigerians about the rising threat of human trafficking, which is increasingly being carried out through social relationships, gym settings, and deceitful job advertisements. According to NAPTIP spokesman Adekoye Vincent, traffickers often approach women in recreational centers and other social environments, build relationships with them, and then lure them into trafficking networks.

This tactic involves presenting themselves as helpful service providers, offering assistance with tasks such as domestic chores, shopping, and sourcing goods, and gaining the victim's trust over time. Vincent also highlighted the use of fake job advertisements, particularly online, to deceive potential victims. He explained that traffickers often exploit the vulnerabilities of unsuspecting individuals, particularly women, by offering help with everyday tasks and gaining their trust through seemingly harmless gestures.

Vincent warned Nigerians to be cautious when establishing online relationships or accepting unsolicited offers of assistance and employment, urging them to verify the identities and intentions of those making attractive offers. He emphasized the devastating emotional and psychological consequences that victims of trafficking may face, including unwanted pregnancies, and advised people to avoid rushing into online friendships and to always be vigilant when encountering attractive job opportunities.
