Toro y Moi, also known as Chaz Bear, has announced his upcoming album Unusua, set to release in a few weeks. The artist, who first gained recognition as a pioneer of chillwave music, has been experimenting with various musical styles over the past fifteen years. In addition to his recent solo work, Bear has covered Broken Social Scene, worked with Kenny Beats, and even demonstrated an AI music tool at a developer conference. It is hoped that he did not utilize this AI tool while creating Unusua.
Prior to the announcement, Toro Y Moi shared an instrumental track called Proof, featuring a piano combined with a sharp, synthetic arpeggio. The new album will be an instrumental record as well, based on the previously released tracks Proof and Motive. Bear performed, arranged, and produced the entire album himself at Scenic Route in Berkeley and 2200 Studios in Sausalito. A tracklist for Unusua has been released, listing the following songs: Keynote, Motive, Proof, Poor Connection, Interval, Lull, and Obsolete.
