SEBI eases KYC rules for overseas investors, allows digital onboarding without India visit
The revised framework also permits video verification and reliance on existing KYC records held by regulated financial intermediaries and central registries
India's securities regulator, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), has eased Know Your Customer (KYC) requirements for overseas individual investors. This change allows non-resident Indians and foreign nationals from Financial Action Task Force-compliant jurisdictions to complete digital onboarding without visiting India.
The revised rules, effective from December 3, enable custodian banks and brokers to accept digital submission of KYC information and supporting documents from eligible overseas clients. Furthermore, banks and brokers can rely on KYC conducted by other SEBI-registered intermediaries or entities regulated by other financial-sector regulators.
In cases where physical verification is not feasible, video-based verification is permitted. The updated framework will also apply to re-KYC of eligible overseas clients. However, foreign nationals seeking an India investing license under the foreign portfolio investor route will remain subject to SEBI's FPI framework.
