Nithya Raman, an Indian-born politician and urban planner, is set to potentially become the next mayor of Los Angeles, according to polling site Decision Desk HQ. The Associated Press reported that Ms. Raman is leading with 51.7% support compared to incumbent Karen Bass, who has 48.3%, with 67% of votes counted as of Wednesday evening.
If elected, she would be the city's first Asian-American mayor, and the most recent Democratic socialist to win local office. Raman, who received support from Hollywood celebrities such as Tina Fey, Mindy Kaling, and Nicholas Stoller, has pledged to focus on housing affordability, infrastructure improvements, ending pay-to-play politics, job creation, and protecting residents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents if she wins.
Born in Kerala in 1981, Raman moved to the US with her mother at age six and graduated from Harvard University. She has worked on non-governmental organizations promoting the rights of slum dwellers in India before moving to Los Angeles in 2013, where she ran for the City Council and served a second term in 2024.
