The Lagos State Government is planning to expand its compressed natural gas (CNG) station network across the state to 19 stations by the first quarter of 2027. Ibile Oil and Gas Corporation Managing Director Tayo Gbajumo revealed this during a briefing at the 2026 Lagos Energy Summit. Currently, there are four operational CNG stations in Ikorodu, Agege, Ojota, and Oshodi.
An additional five stations are set to be commissioned by November 12, 2026. Gbajumo emphasized that improving infrastructure is crucial in reducing long queues at existing CNG stations. He stressed that the state is collaborating with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources to develop CNG infrastructure across Lagos. By Q1 2028, the government aims to increase the number of CNG stations by 10 more.
Concerning the safety of CNG-powered vehicles, Gbajumo assured that the fuel is safe when installations and conversions are conducted by certified professionals. He highlighted that CNG has been used globally for over 50 years as one of the safest transportation fuels when properly handled. The Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Biodun Ogunleye, mentioned that the summit would bring together various stakeholders to discuss challenges in the energy value chain, focusing on practical solutions to Nigeria's electricity challenges.
