Jordan says terrorist attack killed policeman in Amman

A Jordanian policeman was tragically killed and another injured in a terrorist attack in Amman on Thursday, officials stated. Corporal Jawad Ali Khalaf Al Salayta, performing his duties, confronted an assailant wielding a sharp object on Medina Street around 12:20pm. The police promptly intervened, subduing the attacker and apprehending him.

However, Corporal Al Salayta succumbed to his injuries in the hospital, while the officer leading the patrol sustained facial injuries and remains hospitalized in a stable condition. Initial investigations suggest the suspect had intended to target Public Security Directorate personnel. Security forces are now interrogating the suspect.

The government mourns Corporal Al Salayta, acknowledging his sacrifice in service to the nation. In a separate incident last month, nine Christian individuals were killed and 34 wounded when gunmen attacked a funeral service at St George’s Greek Orthodox Church in Karak governorate, a village approximately 80km south of Amman. This attack marked the deadliest assault on Jordan’s Christian minority since the 1950s.

The perpetrators have since been apprehended and charged with terrorism offenses. The Christian community in Jordan numbers around 250,000 out of the country’s 11 million residents.
