Lionsgate has officially greenlit an untitled animated prequel to the popular "John Wick" film series, which will delve into the "impossible task" that led the protagonist to rise above his gangland overlords known as the High Tables. Keanu Reeves is set to reprise his role as the determined hitman. Details of the project remain under wraps, with Lionsgate announcing the news during their recent earnings call.
The prequel will be directed by Shannon Tindle and written by Ryan and Kaz Firpo. The production team includes Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee from Thunder Road, Chad Stehelski of 87Eleven Entertainment, and new partners Point Grey. Reeves will also serve as a producer for the animated film. Tindle, who previously directed "Ultraman: Rising" for Netflix, is known for her work in animation and television, including the Emmy-winning series "Lost Ollie."
The "John Wick" franchise has been expanding in recent years, with films like "Ballerina" and "Caine," as well as discussions about a potential "Chapter 5." Additionally, a television series tentatively titled "John Wick: Under the High Table" is in development, set to be a collaboration between Lionsgate Television, 87Eleven Entertainment, and Thunder Road.
