Galaxa - Building a BBC Micro game with AI

As a kid I made a BBC Micro game that got published in Computer and Video Games magazine (C&VG) in 1983 called Caterpillar. It was my first ever game and was pretty bad even for a BASIC game listing of its time. At the start of this year and while convalescing in hospital I decided to rewrite the game in 6502 assembler. That rewrite and story can be found here: 43 Years Later: Finishing My BBC…

Paul Newell recalls creating a BBC Micro game called Caterpillar in 1983, which was published in Computer and Video Games magazine. In 2023, while recovering from an illness, Newell decided to rewrite the game using 6502 assembler. The rewritten version, named Galaxa, was intended to be a clone of the popular Galaxian game.

Newell attempted to utilize AI tools, specifically Claude and Opus 5.5, to assist in the development process. Although the AI code was initially poor, Newell managed to refine it over several weeks. He also drew upon his own accumulated knowledge to push the project forward.

Despite the advances in AI since February, Newell aimed to create a Galaxian clone for the BBC Micro due to his long-standing interest in the game. He set out to achieve this goal on a wet Saturday morning, with the end result being Galaxa.

To accomplish this task, Newell relied solely on Opus 5.5, as the cost of writing the 100% code had significantly reduced. However, memory constraints (limited to ~8k) necessitated trimming back on certain features during the design phase. Newell was impressed by the significant improvement in AI capabilities over such a short period of time, resulting in a game that closely matches the hardware's capabilities.

Galaxa is available to play at https://newell-paul.github.io/galaxa-6502/ and its source code is hosted on GitHub at https://github.com/newell-paul/galaxa-6502. Newell himself achieved a high score of 20550 in the game.

How AI Is Changing Healthcare in 2026 - And Why Developers Should Pay Attention

How AI Is Changing Healthcare in 2026 - And Why Developers Should Pay Attention Healthcare was slow to change for 20 years. In 2026, AI changed it in just 12 months.

  • AI medical assistants save doctors up to 10+ hours weekly, enabling them to see more patients.
  • AI chatbots reduce missed calls by 40% and increase patient satisfaction for clinics.

LLM Apps in Python: A Production Stack Without Framework Bloat

LLM Apps in Python: A Production Stack Without Framework Bloat The first LLM feature I shipped that actually paid for itself was about 200 lines of Python and one SDK.

  • Minimal Python stack for LLM apps with 200 lines of code
  • Core code consists of HTTP call, tool loop, and state management
  • Framework used only for complex requirements like human-in-the-loop pauses

Six mistakes in introducing AI automation in SMBs

Six mistakes when introducing AI automation in SMBs Over the past few years, I've been seeing the same pattern. A company of twenty people buys a license, someone builds an impressive demo, everyone…

  • Small companies purchase AI licenses without process clarity
  • Most mistakes occur before coding begins, not during implementation
  • Detailed process table with frequency, time, performer, and error handling prevents failures
