Deniran Ortega is set to lead Nigeria's Olympic Eagles during their 2027 Africa U-23 Cup of Nations second-round qualifying match against the Democratic Republic of Congo, following head coach Éric Chelle's absence, reports DAILY POST. Chelle, who also coaches the Super Eagles, Nigeria's senior men's team, is anticipated to attend Uyo this weekend to oversee preparations for the double-header against Tanzania.
Given the alignment of the two fixtures, Ortega, the Olympic Eagles' first assistant coach, will assume team leadership for the encounters with DR Congo. The Olympic Eagles will fly to Lubumbashi for the first leg on November 13, the same day the Super Eagles host Tanzania at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo. The return leg at the Remo Stars Sports Complex in Ikenne will also clash with the Super Eagles' Matchday Four game against the Taifa Stars.
Ortega, a UEFA-licensed coach, will be aided by the team's other assistant coach and staff as the Olympic Eagles aim for a positive outcome against DR Congo and advancement in the qualifying campaign.
