Zelensky in Spain for talks with world leaders
Madrid is hosting a two-day summit of the Ibero-American Community, a 22-nation group of Spanish and Portuguese-speaking countries that are mainly in Latin America.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made an unexpected trip to Madrid on Wednesday to seek additional military aid against Russia at a summit of Latin American leaders. The summit, hosted in Madrid, brings together a 22-nation group of Spanish and Portuguese-speaking countries primarily located in Latin America. Zelensky highlighted his top priority as bolstering Ukraine's air defenses, safeguarding his citizens, and expanding defense cooperation and production.
The summit is taking place just weeks before a November 29 presidential election that Zelensky is predicted to lose, amidst a contentious relationship with his leftist opponent. The summit's diverse attendees include far-right leaders from Argentina and Chile, as well as conservative figures from Bolivia. A statement from the European Commission following a separate meeting in Brussels emphasized the discussion of tools to support Ukraine's post-war reconstruction efforts.
