Vietnam biosphere reserve network reviews 2026 activities

On November 4, representatives from Vietnam's 12 UNESCO-recognized biosphere reserves convened in Quang Tri Province to evaluate ongoing activities and explore enhanced collaboration. The World Network of Biosphere Reserves in Vietnam's 2026 review conference, held in Phong Nha Commune, convened over 120 delegates from UNESCO, international organizations, governmental bodies, and reserve representatives.

Discussions centered on assessing 2026 activities, exchanging knowledge, pinpointing challenges, and devising strategies to bolster cooperation among biosphere reserves and their international partners.

Associate Professor Kieu Van Hoan, Chairman of MAB Vietnam, highlighted that Phong Nha-Ke Bang in Quang Tri Province was acknowledged by UNESCO as Vietnam's 12th World Biosphere Reserve in 2026. He underscored that this recognition reflects Vietnam's abundant natural resources, diverse biodiversity, cultural heritage, and potential for sustainable development, alongside the nation's dedication to fulfilling its commitments under UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere Program.

For 2027, MAB Vietnam plans to assist biosphere reserves in devising annual, five-year, and 10-year plans tailored to local circumstances and the Hangzhou Strategic Action Plan. The organization will also offer guidance and support in executing and submitting periodic review reports. Furthermore, MAB Vietnam aims to facilitate connections between biosphere reserves and donors to execute ecosystem restoration and enhancement initiatives, sustainable carbon certification projects, and sustainable livelihood models.

These initiatives strive to elevate the well-being of residents in buffer zones and alleviate strain on the core zones of biosphere reserves.

The conference featured an exhibition displaying information, photographs, maps, publications, and signature One Commune, One Product (OCOP) items from the 12 biosphere reserves. Delegates also visited Phong Nha Cave and the Phong Nha Cave Exploration Information Center to gain insights into the area's natural landscapes, geological importance, and cave systems in Phong Nha-Ke Bang.
