In the 2026 US midterm elections, Abdul El-Sayed, an Egyptian-American progressive Democrat, has declared victory in the race for Michigan's Senate seat, marking a historic moment as the first Muslim elected to the Senate. Early results, after 80 percent of votes were counted, showed El-Sayed leading his Republican opponent Mike Rogers with 51.8 percent of the vote to Rogers' 46.2 percent.
Although the Associated Press has not officially declared the race, Fox News and other outlets have followed suit. El-Sayed will succeed retiring Democratic Senator Gary Peters. In his victory speech, he expressed pride and honor at being named the next senator-elect. He acknowledged overcoming Islamophobic slurs directed at him by US President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance.
El-Sayed also addressed parents, assuring them that "the bad guys lost" after their children were exposed to the president's mockery of someone's name or religious practices.
